The Primary Items and Dimensions Panes

The Primary Items and Dimensions panes in the CDM Extension Taxonomy Editor contain valuable information about hierarchies and relationship groups in the taxonomy that is being edited.

The Primary Items pane is used to create networks of concepts and defining calculation relationships between them. Concept properties are visually presented for each element.

The Dimensions pane is used to create constructs which are used to give the corresponding concepts a dimensional nature. For example, assets could be reported in Canada or the US. The basic structure of a dimensional construct is Hypercube - Dimension - Member - (more Members).

Note: Not all typed dimensions are supported. However, some typed dimensions are supported for US GAAP, UK/Ireland FRC, and other jurisdictions.

Relationship groups that are selected in the Relationship Groups tab of the Extension Taxonomies pane are visible in the Primary Items and Dimensions panes.

Important: To modify the structure of a relationship group in the Primary Items and Dimensions panes, you must first check out that relationship group. When a relationship group is checked out, other users cannot modify it.

The Search Field

You can use the Search field to search for taxonomy elements by their label or element name.

You can find the Search field above the Primary Items pane. You can search for elements in the Primary Items and Dimensions panes. To include label text in the search, click the Search Label icon Search Label Icon , enter text in the Search field, and press Enter. After you perform a search, click the NextNext Icon and PreviousPrevious Icon icons to scroll forward and backward in the search results.

Use the Toggle Element PropertiesToggle Element Properties Icon icon to hide or show the properties for each element in the search results.

The Add Submenus in the Primary Items Pane

You can use the Add submenus to add one or more elements to the Primary Items pane.

Ensure that the relationship group with which you want to work is checked out and view it in the Primary Items pane. Then, right-click an element to add one or more elements in the following submenus:

  • Click Add > Child to add an element.
  • Click Add > Child With Bound Label to add an element whose label is bound to content in the report object.
  • Click Add > Subtree to add elements that are generated based on a selected range in an Excel object (rows or columns).
  • Click Add > Subtree (and bind) to add elements that are generated based on a range in an Excel object (rows or columns). The labels are bound to the content in the report object.

Every time an element is added, a standard English label is automatically created for the element, with the following characteristics:

  • Label Text is the content you were working with (either in a report object or entered into the Search field in the Search Elements window).
  • Label Type is Label.
  • Language is en-US.

The Add Submenus in the Dimensions Pane

You can use the Dimensions pane to add hypercubes, dimensions, or members.

To add a top-level element, right-click a relationship group, and then click one of the following options:

  • Click Add Table to add a table as a top element of the relationship group.
  • Click Add Axis to add an axis as a top element of the relationship group.
  • Click Add Domain to add a domain as a top element of the relationship group.

Then, to add a child element to an existing element, click any of the following submenus:

  • Click Child to add an element.
  • Click Child With Bound Label to add an element whose label is bound to content in the report object.
  • Click Subtree to add elements that are generated based on a range in an Excel object (rows or columns).
  • Click Subtree (and bind) to add elements that are generated based on a range in an Excel object (rows or columns). The labels are bound to content in the report object.

Every time an element is added, a standard English label is automatically created for the element, with the following characteristics:

  • Label Text is the content you were working with (either in a report object or entered into the Search field in the Search Elements window).
  • Label Type is Label.
  • Language is en-US.

The Delete Menu

You can use the Delete menu to delete a link from the Primary Items or Dimensions pane.

To delete a link, right-click it and select Delete. Only the link between the element and its parent is deleted. The element still exists in the taxonomy.

Note: If there are any extension elements that are not linked to, they are deleted automatically. Base elements are never deleted even if the last link to one is deleted.

The Replace Option

You can use the Replace option to replace an element with a new or existing element in Primary Items or Dimensions pane.

When you select the Replace option, the Search Elements window opens. You can complete the following tasks:

  • Enter a new element name in the Search field and click New Element.
  • Click Search to search for an existing element. Any existing elements are displayed in a list and you can select an element by double-clicking it.

Note: If all instances of the element are displayed in the pane and the element is not part of the base taxonomy, the element is deleted.

The Expand All and Collapse All Options

You can use the Expand All and Collapse All options to expand or collapse all the items in the Primary Items or Dimensions pane.

To expand all items in the Primary Items or Dimensions pane, right-click an item and click Expand All.

To collapse all items in the Primary Items or Dimensions pane, right-click an item and click Collapse All.

The Default Option in the Dimensions Pane

You can use the Default option to select a default member for each dimension in the Dimensions pane.

You can select only one domain member for each dimension as the default member.

The Toggle Usable Option

You can use the Toggle Usable option to set a selected domain member as usable or unusable.

Use this option to set a selected domain member as usable or unusable, so that you can use the xbrld:usable attribute for an XBRL dimension on the arcrole.

Note: After you make a selected element unusable, the domain member element is not available for tagging. If the element has child elements, the child elements remain available for tagging.

The Reference Another Group Option

You can use the Reference Another Group option to reuse a grouping of previously defined dimensional information.

You can use a structure of dimensional information that is already in use in one group, multiple times in multiple groups. Any changes made to the structure in that group become visible in all the groups which are referencing it. In this way, you don't need to rebuild dimensional structures in multiple groups if those structures are the same in all groups.

For example, you have previously built an axis named Axis 1 in a group called Axis Group 1. In Axis Group 2, you add a table and add Axis 1 to it. You then right-click on Axis 1 and use the Reference Another Group option to select Axis Group 1. The same structured dimensional information in Axis Group 1 is then applied to Axis Group 2.

The Set Preferred Label Option

You can use the Set Preferred Label option to select a preferred label type for extension taxonomy elements in the Primary Items or Dimensions pane.

The Associate Table and Unassociate Table Options

You can use the Associate Table or Unassociate Table option to add or remove an association between a concept and a table.

Tables that are created for a relationship group in the Dimensions pane can be associated with concepts of any relationship group in the Primary Items pane.

To view tables that can be associated in the Table list, right-click an element in the Primary Items pane. Click Associate Table to establish an association between a concept and a table. When a table is associated with an element, the Table icon Table Icon is visible with the element. You can hover over the element name to view the associated table name.

To remove the association between an element and a table, click Unassociate Table.

The Restriction Table Option

You can use the Restriction Table option to disable a specific subset of dimensional assignments that are associated with a primary item.

Tables are used to enable different dimensional assignments in primary items. Restriction tables are used to disable specific subsets of those assignments for an individual primary item.

For example, you have three primary items (A, B, and C), all associated with three members (1, 2, and 3) belonging to a dimension (X) associated with a table (Y). You want to disable member 3 for the primary item B. In a separate relationship group, you create a table (Z) that is to be the restriction table. Add the dimension X to table Z. Then add member 3 to dimension X. In the original relationship group, right-click primary item B and use the Restriction Table option to associate it with table Z, the restriction table you just created. When the taxonomy is generated and used for tagging, member 3 cannot be used with primary item B, but all other combinations can be used.

The Toggle Suppress Definition Link Option

You can use the Toggle Suppress Definition Link option to suppress one of the definition links that occurs between a pair of elements.

Consider the following example with a cash flow statement that uses the same element with preferred labels:

Table + Top Abstract Element Element A, beginning of period (preferred label) Element B Element C Element A, ending of period (preferred label) + Axis + Domain + Member 1 + Member 2

The relationships between Top Abstract Element and Element A, with their different types of preferred labels, are allowed in the Presentation linkbase. However, in the Definition linkbase, having two links between Top Abstract Element and Element A is not allowed. When you use the Toggle Suppress Definition Link option, you can remove one of the links from the taxonomy.

Note:

Links that are suppressed in this way are displayed in purple in the Primary Items pane. When you import a taxonomy into the CDM Extension Taxonomy Editor, elements that are displayed in purple contain suppressed links, but elements that are displayed in black have unsuppressed links.

The Edit Formula Option

You can use the Edit Formula option to define basic calculation rules between concepts (for example, A + B = C) in the Primary Items pane.

Calculation rules can be created only between elements in the same relationship group. All rules are emitted to the calculation upon taxonomy generation and validated during XBRL instance generation.

After you click Edit Formula in the menu, all other options from the menu are disabled until the formula is accepted.

When you click Edit Formula, this element has the Summation icon to indicate that it is the total element. All other elements in the same relationship group initially have a blank. These elements can be assigned a Plus icon or a Minus icon to be included in the calculation relationship, or they can be unassigned.

After a calculation relationship is created, click Accept Formula to accept the formula and enable other menu options.

Note: Abstract elements cannot be used in a calculation relationship.

Table: Edit Formula Element Icons

The Toggle Element Properties Icon

Property icons are displayed beside each element in the Primary Items and Dimensions panes in the CDM Extension Taxonomy Editor.

You can hover over the Toggle Element Properties icon to view information about the element.

Tip: If you cannot see the icons, click the Toggle Element Properties icon Toggle Element Properties Icon above the Primary Items pane.

  • The first column contains the label type value of the element.
  • The second column contains the balance value of the element.
  • The third column contains the period type value of the element.
  • The fourth column contains the type value of the element.
  • The fifth column contains the base taxonomy prefix. This column is visible when an element is from a base taxonomy, and it is not editable.

To change the label type, balance, period type, and type values for each element, right-click the icon and select a new value from the menu.

Note: Element properties cannot be modified for elements that are sourced from the base taxonomy.
