Add a Taxonomy from a URL
You can use CDM XBRL to import a taxonomy that is on a website by referencing a URL.
You select the entry point schema by selecting the appropriate XSD file. The entry point schema (or XBRL taxonomy extension schema document) brings together a set of relationships files with calculation, definitions, label, presentation, and reference linkbases. CDM XBRL automatically loads the linkbases that are associated with the taxonomy.
After a taxonomy is imported, you can associate the taxonomy with a project. The project can then be selected in a report for tagging with the associated taxonomy.
Note: If you are working offline, you might need to update the Cache Manager before importing from a URL.
To add a taxonomy from a URL:
- Click the Home tab, then in the Navigation Pane, click Administration.
- Under XBRL, double-click Taxonomies. The Taxonomies tab opens in the work area.
- Click Home > Add > Taxonomy from URL. The Add Taxonomy window opens.
- Specify a name for the taxonomy.
- Specify a description for the taxonomy if you want. The description can contain a maximum of 512 characters.
- Enter the location of the taxonomy files by using the URL of the entry point. The file must be an XBRL entry point file.
- Select the Force Overwrite checkbox to import the taxonomy if it uses the same URL as a previously imported taxonomy. A prompt is displayed. Click Yes to proceed.
Important: Select the Force Overwrite checkbox only when a taxonomy with new content is published using the same URL as the previous taxonomy. When you select the checkbox, a new taxonomy is created that can then be used for a new project or to replace a taxonomy in another project. You are still able to regenerate projects using the previous version of the base taxonomy that has the same URL, without any errors or changes.
- Click OK. The taxonomy is validated and added.
Taxonomy Locations
You can find commonly used taxonomy files at several locations for use in CDM XBRL.
- xbrl.org - This website hosts taxonomy files that are required by XBRL extension taxonomies.
- taxonomies.xbrl.us - This website hosts base taxonomies (and supporting files) for US GAAP that are provided by XBRL-US.
- sec.gov - This website has information specific to EDGAR, such as the edgartaxonomies.xml file that helps taxonomy validation. You can apply edgartaxonomies.xml to ensure that only base taxonomies that are recognized by the SEC are used by extension taxonomies. The website also hosts taxonomies for US GAAP.
- xbrl.fasb.org - This website hosts base US GAAP files that are provided by the Financial Accounting Standard Board (FASB).
