Define the Element Properties in an Extension Taxonomy

An element is a basic unit consisting of a start tag, end tag, associated attributes and their values, and any text that is contained between the two. You can set defaults that are displayed and ready to use when you add or create any new element in an extension taxonomy in the CDM Extension Taxonomy Editor.

For example, values that are set on the Dimensions tab of the Taxonomy Editor Options window are displayed as default values on the Element Properties tab in the Extension Taxonomies pane when you are adding a dimension.

To define the element properties in an extension taxonomy:

  1. Open the extension taxonomy.
  2. Click Options. The Taxonomy Editor Options window opens.
  3. For each tab, set the following required element properties:
    • Name - The name of the element that defines the concept within the taxonomy and instance document. It must be unique, and it must follow the Label Camel Case Concatenation (LC3) rules for SEC. Any text that is entered after the [CDMText:Join] prefix is added to the name when an element is created.
    • ID - The identifier for the element. It used to refer the element in other documents (for example, linkbases). The ID is in the form {Prefix}_{Name}, where Prefix is the taxonomy prefix, and Name is the element name. This field is read-only.
    • Balance - This field is used to assign a weight attribute to the element for calculation relationships.
    • Abstract - If the element is used hierarchically to group other elements, it cannot be used to tag data in an instance document. If this checkbox is selected, the element cannot be used to tag data. The labels of abstract elements are italicized in the Primary Items pane or the Dimensions pane. If it is not selected, the element can be used to tag data. An abstract element cannot be used as a fact in an instance.
    • Period Type - Defines the time period of the taxonomy.
    • Type - The type of data to be associated with the element.
  4. The Labels tab is used to add new label types, and apply localization. Each element has a standard label that corresponds to the element name, and is unique across the taxonomy. Elements can have multiple labels, and for each label, the language and type of label must be identified.

You can use the following icons in the icon panel to manage labels.

  5. Click OK to apply the settings.
  6. Click Save on the ribbon. The default element properties that you defined are saved.
